When people reach that point in their lives when they’re ready for commitment, responsibility, and unconditional appreciation (i.e. deciding to get a pet), there are other options to consider than the typical run-of-the-mill dog, cat or gerbil. One of these options is the exotic and adorable kinkajou. If it’s a good enough pet for Paris Hilton, then it’s good enough for you!
Becoming the proud owner of a kinkajou will not only impress friends, it will provide a challenging yet rewarding experience in pet care. These sweet little critters might not be a familiar sight at your local vet, but they’re steadily becoming a more popular choice amongst adventurous pet owners.
There are, however, a few considerations to think about when caring for your kinkajou. For example, kinkajous are nocturnal and require a caged area that mimics that of their natural environment – the rainforest. This means plenty of nooks and crannies for hiding, shrubbery and branches to play on, and because they’re nocturnal you can expect them to make a fair bit of noise during the night!
In terms of providing them with the right diet, your new pet will have an appetite for bananas, eggs, mangos and even gummy bears! Be careful, although kinkajous have friendly and affectionate natures, they also have razor sharp teeth that are loaded with nasty bacteria, so be prepared to handle with care!
Deciding to get an exotic pet is an important decision that should not be taken lightly. You’ll need to consider local, state and federal laws, and be aware that animal rights activists may not approve of your choice of furry companion. As with all pets, keep a watchful eye around children and other pets. If you have any questions or concerns about getting an exotic pet, why not speak to one of the friendly staff members at Nepean Animal Hospital on 0289995140 who will be happy to help you on your path to becoming an exotic pet owner.

Due to the success of our Client Information Evenings in 2011, we are planning our first 2012 client information event. This time, however, we are doing things a little differently. This time, we are asking you what you want to hear about.
Is there any topic that you would like information on? If so, please comment below with any suggestions.
Here are some that we thought might be on the agenda:
- what should I feed my dog/ cat?
- Osteoarthritis - what can we do?
- Heart disease - what is a murmur and what does it mean?
- Snakes and ticks - how do I recognise symptoms and what do I do?
- Diarrhoea and vomitting - when should I be concerned?
For those of you who have not been to one of our evenings yet, they are free of charge, held at the practice on a weekday evening with drinks and nibbles and there is a 30-45 minute presentation on the given topic. Please let us know what you would like to hear about.
If you have any further questions please send us an enquiry via our contact form here or call us on 02 8999 5140

Meet Jerrard (Said in a French Accent). This ginger and white bombshell came into our care as a stray in January after he had been found by a caring passer by on the street with some horrific injuries. He was terrified and in agonising pain as the lower part of his left hind limb had been lost and was severely infected as was a wound on his tail. After stabilising him, Dr. Kirsty performed some radical surgery to amputate his leg and tail. He is now almost finished his treatment and is on our adoption list, waiting to find a good home. He has had a horrible start to life but is now so bounding with affection that we are so excited to find him a home. He is a little purr machine and he does enjoy curling up and falling asleep on your shoulder. He still plays and bounds around like any four-legged kitten after his mousey and ball.
Please come visit him and let us know if you or anybody you know would be interested in taking him home to spoil him!
If you're interested in taking Jerrard home or have any questions please call us on 02 9119 5907.
